  • The Iran War: While gas prices have spiked over $1.50 per gallon due to the conflict in Iran, Baumgartner’s response has focused on shifting blame to state leadership rather than addressing Trump’s foreign policy.

  • The Tariff Enabler: Baumgartner is a reliable vote for Trump whose tariff regime has collected over $214.7 billion in new taxes on imports.
  • The Spending Spree: Despite campaigning on fiscal restraint, Baumgartner recently voted for massive spending bills that continue to fuel the federal deficit.
  • The Ag Squeeze: Despite the economic storm hitting WA05, Baumgartner has failed to secure help for farmers pinched between increasing costs and buyers chased away by tariffs.
  • The “Relief” Distraction: In March, Baumgartner publicly called on Gov Ferguson to provide relief at the pump, trying to shift the blame from the cause (Trump/Iran) to the State.

  • Record Breaking Gas Prices: As of May 13, 2026, gas prices in Washington have hit historic highs. The average for regular unleaded in Spokane is $5.39, while in Walla Walla it has climbed to $5.55.

  • The Fuel Tax Reality: Since the start of the war in February, U.S. gasoline prices have surged by roughly 45%, directly punishing Eastern Washington commuters and logistics businesses.

  • The Farm Crisis: Fertilizer prices are projected to rise 31% this year, driven by a 60% jump in urea prices. For Palouse wheat growers, this “suffocating” pressure is threatening the survival of family-run operations.

  • Export Markets in Freefall: Roughly 90% of Washington’s wheat and 97% of its apples are sold outside the state. Global trade disruptions and retaliatory market shifts are driving prices down for growers while production costs skyrocket.
